Understanding Institution Types and Department Code Information

Learn what information is collected when institutions sign up for a TOEFL Designated Institution (DI) code and how it is used.

Written by Jenny Geiler

Overview

When an institution signs up to receive TOEFL scores, it is issued a Designated Institution (DI) code. During the setup process, institutions are asked to select their Institution Type(s):

  • Graduate Organization

  • Graduate Business Organization

  • Law Organization

  • Medical/Nursing Organization

  • Undergraduate Organization.

Institutions can have more than one institution type per DI code. If a Graduate Organization type is selected by the test taker, they can further select specific departments to which the score can be routed internally by the institution.

This article explains how these designations can simplify your admissions processes and help route test taker scores to the appropriate offices.

What happens when an Institution sets up a new DI Code?

When requesting a DI code, institutions are asked to:

  • Select the relevant institution type(s) (see above)

How accurate selections help your Institution

Selecting your institution types and fields of study accurately helps you:

  • Route scores efficiently: Scores automatically arrive at the correct admissions office

  • Manage multi-department institutions: Separate undergraduate, graduate, business, and law school operations

  • Verify applicant intent: Confirm applicants are applying to the correct program level

  • Troubleshoot score delivery: Identify if scores were sent to an incorrect department

What Information Do Students See?

Institutions (with corresponding DI Codes) and Institution Types will appear as unique options to test takers when they select score recipients.

From the student perspective, score sending is simple: they choose the institution using the DI code and institution type. If they select a Graduate Organization, they have the option to specify a Department.

Common Questions

Can institutions update their institution type or program information later?
Yes, institutions may update their institution type and field of study selections at any time by using the TOEFL Designated Institution Form. When making changes, please select the option ‘update a current listing’ to ensure your existing DI code information is modified appropriately.

Can applicants send scores to multiple departments?
Yes. Applicants can select different department codes when sending scores to the same institution if they're applying to multiple programs at the same institution. However, this will result in sending a separate report.

What if an applicant selects the wrong department code?
Many institutions have centralized score repositories where all departments can access scores regardless of the code used. However, it's best practice to ask applicants to verify they've selected the correct code for their program.

Can I see which department code was used?
Yes. The department code information is included in score reports received through TOEFL Access, helping you identify the destination that the applicant intended to reach. They can also be filtered in TOEFL Access for quick viewing.
